An estimated 250,000 Marched through central London to call for an alternative to the present Con.Dem programme of cuts. Young and old, black and white, we were united in opposition to the current UK government's destruction of public services. We were there for four hours - from Strand to Trafalgar Square. Somehow we couldn't muster the enthusiasm to go on to hear young Miliband. But we must build an alternative. A dilemma.

Shropshire, Easter 2009

The sun shone all week-end. I was born in Shropshire (on the border between England and Wales), but have not gone back there much in the last 20 years. However, our friends Ed and Eve have a house in Bishop's Castle and we were able to get there this Easter weekend. We walked around the village, drank tea in the garden and had a Sunday walk on the Long Mynd. A lovely thing to be able to do.

Only 2 weeks. Being able to work with a camera has given me access to rehearsals and concerts during the ECM record label's 40th anniversary season at King's Place in London, life behind the scenes at Teatr Polski in Warsaw, a community arts project led by Abigail Fallis at a primary school in Islington, and the work being done by a group of young people from the G20 countries who are participating in a project run by the British Council. I feel very lucky.

So there we all were in Downing Street. I've been working with a British Council project (http://www.global-changemakers.net/) that focuses on the role of young people in community action projects. Gordon Brown will be sharing a session with 6 of these "Global Changemakers" at the World Economic Forum in Davos at the beginning of February, and he invited them to meet him at No. 10. They were impressed.

We joined 50,000 people marching against the war in Gaza. It was peaceful when we there and it felt important to be part of it. Despite a feeling that too much of the rhetoric reduced complex issues to slogans, and despite the anger and latent violence in the stance of some of the young men we still wanted to be there - the demonstration of our rejection of this war is a necessary action.

I hadn't seen Jim Lagden for 38 years - ever since I left Keele University. We got in touch a couple of weeks ago. He's now introduced me to the pleasures of the Magdala and whole set of paths on Hampstead Heath which I'd never walked along before.

Moscow 860th birthday

It's Moscow's 860th birthday - the main upshot of which seems to be that all public spaces are closed, along with half the roads across the city. An interesting walk from the Novotel, where I'm staying, down to Red Square (which is neither square nor red). The Kremlin's quite grim.

It's 650 km from St Petersburg to Moscow and the journey takes five and a half hours. You pass two medium sized towns in the journey between the two cities, a lot of forest and some lakes.

Teddy died on Wednesday 22 March. She was stupid, awkward, an aggressive coward, and a bloody nuisance at times. But she was innocent, spontaneous and closer to the angels than we'll ever be. I don't think we go to heaven, but I'm sure that Teddy and our other dog Dylan (who died in Poland 2 years ago) are pissing against the gate-posts of paradise at this moment and that St Peter was happy to let them in to the Elysian Fields...

The sun shone in Cheshire for what feels like the first time in months. A frosty Sunday morning. I took Teddy (the aged terrier) and the new Leica M8 out for a walk. The colours astounded me when I came to do the processing. It's not just a black and white tool.

Davos - World Economic Forum, January 2007

The World Economic Forum was in Davos last week. I spent three days down the road from the big event working on a visual documentation of the work of a group of six young people who were the youngest presenters ever at the Forum. They put forward proposals for a Global Fund for Education on a panel alongside Queen Rania of Jordan and Gordon Brown, the British Finance Minister. Davos Glaris was very Swiss and very beautiful. The British Council supported team were hugely impressive.

A new toy - Leica M8

I took delivery of a Leica M8 last week. This is the digital descendant of the M series rangefinder camera and is a wonderful, small, discrete, reportage camera. The images posted today are informal and inconsequential snaps of friends and neighbourhoods. I hope to be using it for more systematic work in the coming weeks.
